Women in Art Diptych

De Hallen Amsterdam until March 10, Mercatorplein until March 19, Westerpark until April 7.

For Women in Art I was inspired by a special love couple who were pioneers in modern dance and special effects during the first feminist wave. Loïe Fuller (1862-1928) and Gab Sorère (1870-1961). Loïe was the first American dancer to conquer Europe during the Belle Époque. She took off the corset and danced barefoot to classical music. Fuller used movement, fabric, light and illusion to bring abstract shapes to life with her body and to imitate natural phenomena. Loïe was a master of illusion, disguise and revelation, but she never cast a veil over who she was or who she loved. In Paris she started a relationship with Gab Sorère, who was 8 years younger. Gab worked as a stage designer, special effects inventor and filmmaker. Through light and illusion, Sorère was able to make dancers disappear on stage. An inspiring couple who lived their lives against the norms and expectations of their time.

BEST DUTCH BOOK DESIGN

‘This intimate photo book in a signed, numbered edition of 250 copies, features truly fantastic spreads. Thanks to a folding technique that is as simple as it is effective, this becomes an interplay between different layers of experience: online and offline, inner and outer world, dream and reality. Perfect Pearl has a sewn binding in a cover with grooves, which is then quarter-folded to give a format of 170×280 mm. Intimate details remain hidden behind the fold, and can be seen only once the pages have been completely unfolded. This fold results in beautiful combinations of images – each page is as surprising as the last and we feel that we just have to keep on unfolding. An intimate, physical experience which one jury member remarked could be a nod to erotic magazines, which would be carried rolled up or folded to hide their content…’

Tara Fallaux.

Tara Fallaux – I Write This Letter in Bed & Sarah Mei Herman – Solace. A duo presentation on Chinese youth and intimacy

February 18 – April 8, 2023

Festive Opening on Sat 18 Feb, 17–19 hrs

After attending the same artist residency, C.E.A.C in Xiamen, China, photographer Sarah Mei Herman and visual artist Tara Fallaux explore the concept of intimacy in a culture different from their own. The resulting projects are presented in an artistic dialogue at Galerie Caroline O’Breen.

Rather than highlighting contradictions between Western and Eastern culture, both artists seek out the universal. They find common ground in the meaning of love and intimacy among young people. They bear witness to the recognizable human experience of uncertainty and change as these young people make choices on the road to adulthood.

Tara Fallaux created a powerfully intimate film ‘I Write This Letter In Bed’ about Rocy, a lonely young woman in China, and how she reckons with her doubts and insecurities around the concepts of love and marriage. In her project Perfect Pearl, Fallaux places her subjects in the context of their natural habitat, Chinese urban life. The artist investigates how young Chinese women reconcile the intimate and contemporary dimensions of love with the engrained traditions.

In the coming year I will be researching my new project LEVARE.

This project is my visual and philosophical exploration of ways people try and yearn to be weightless, free-floating, flying, or in other words gravity-free. The urge to escape the heaviness of life and the desire to be free and weightless and free from heavy thoughts (depression) is the underlying theme. But escape is almost impossible. Hence the age-old hope that magic can bring salvation. The enchanting, the supernatural, the strange, the impossible.
