Tara Fallaux – I Write This Letter in Bed & Sarah Mei Herman – Solace. A duo presentation on Chinese youth and intimacy

After attending the same artist residency, C.E.A.C in Xiamen, China, photographer Sarah Mei Herman and visual artist Tara Fallaux explore the concept of intimacy in a culture different from their own. The resulting projects are presented in an artistic dialogue at Galerie Caroline O’Breen.

Rather than highlighting contradictions between Western and Eastern culture, both artists seek out the universal. They find common ground in the meaning of love and intimacy among young people. They bear witness to the recognizable human experience of uncertainty and change as these young people make choices on the road to adulthood.

Tara Fallaux created a powerfully intimate film ‘I Write This Letter In Bed’ about Rocy, a lonely young woman in China, and how she reckons with her doubts and insecurities around the concepts of love and marriage. In her project Perfect Pearl, Fallaux places her subjects in the context of their natural habitat, Chinese urban life. The artist investigates how young Chinese women reconcile the intimate and contemporary dimensions of love with the engrained traditions.

In the coming year I will be researching my new project LEVARE.

This project is my visual and philosophical exploration of ways people try and yearn to be weightless, free-floating, flying, or in other words gravity-free. The urge to escape the heaviness of life and the desire to be free and weightless and free from heavy thoughts (depression) is the underlying theme. But escape is almost impossible. Hence the age-old hope that magic can bring salvation. The enchanting, the supernatural, the strange, the impossible.

My film installation MOBILE HOME was shown at BIG ART in the former Bijlmer Prison in Amsterdam. And new to the selection are two large light boxes from Perfect Pearl.

THE LOVE LINE exhibition

The Love Line van Tara Fallaux is een universeel portret over hoe liefde opbloeit tussen twee mensen en de onontkoombare miscommunicatie die ons daarbij in de weg zit.
Via een geluidsinstallatie c/q podcast-serie en een filminstallatie probeert Fallaux de uiteindelijke eenzaamheid van de liefde te doorgronden. Dat doet zij aan de hand van liefdesbekentenissen die te beluisteren zijn op je eigen telefoon. Verwacht herkenning, ontroering en verwondering - een portret van de liefde.

The Love Line is te zien op 26, 27 en 28 november en 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 en 19 december van 13.00 to 16.00 uur in de Portrait Gallery Studio op het Marineterrein in Amsterdam.

In deze audioverhalen horen we mannen en vrouwen van verschillende leeftijden en achtergronden proberen te verwoorden hoe een intense liefdesgeschiedenis ontstond en hoe die voorbij ging.

NUDE // NOW 24.07.2021 – 28.08.2021

Exhibition at Pennings Foundation in Eindhoven.

Nude comes in hundreds of shapes and is made by hundreds of artists, in the Netherlands alone. Martijn van de Griendt is curator of the exhibition Naakt // NU (NUDE // NOW). He chose the exhibitors on instinct, just like he works himself. And he selected photographers he admires, who he just discovered or had known for some time. Almost all of them show new or recent work. About the naked body. Because that is worth showing.
